A new beginning for Kestrel Gymnastics Club

News

History

The Club was founded in 1997. In the early days training took place in the hall of St Johns-on-the-Hill School in Tutshill, on the Welsh border just across the River Wye from Chepstow. As the club developed they expanded into the Whitecross Leisure Centre in Lydney, South Gloucestershire. Operating out of 2 sites was not the best way of trying to develop quality gymnastics and so when some new industrial units were being built in Chepstow an approach was made to develop one as a gymnastics centre. Change of use planning permission was granted and in April 2002 the club moved to new premises. In May 2002 a Lottery grant was made to the club to enable the provision of the sprung floor, the new style vault, called a Table, beam and bar safety matting and soft play equipment for the pre-school section.

In August the sprung floor was laid and by December 2002 the first phase of the development of the facility was completed. Since that time development work had continued and the facility was constantly being upgraded. Fire destroyed this facility in February 2007, and new facilities were sought until the building could be rebuilt. In January 2008 Kestrel Gym Club was once again in its home. However, fire wasn't the only disaster to befall the club, and a flood and then domestics were to see the end of the Kestrel Centre.

In July of 2008 Shirley Lazere-Bennett became the Head Coach of the Kestrel
Gymnastics Club. It took a few months but Kestrel once more found roots in the
Bulwark Industrial Estate just a hop, skip and a jump from its original home.
